Projective Art Therapy Assessments

Sometimes, there is more to your story than words can express.

Understanding our mental and emotional experiences isn't always easy. Children may not have the words to explain what they're feeling. Teens may struggle to communicate what's happening beneath the surface. Adults may have spent years trying to make sense of patterns they can't quite explain.

Art can offer another way to explore those experiences.

At Healing Arts Collaborative, art therapist Hunter Blencowe, ATR offers Projective Art Therapy Assessments that incorporate creative and expressive methods to support a deeper exploration of emotional, behavioral, relational, and psychological functioning.

Using developmentally appropriate art-based activities alongside clinical assessment methods, we work to better understand the individual beyond the symptoms they present.

These assessments may be particularly helpful for individuals who have difficulty expressing their experiences verbally, families seeking a better understanding of behavioral or emotional concerns, or adults looking to explore longstanding questions about their mental health.

What Do Art Therapy Assessments Explore?

Depending on the referral question and assessment methods selected, areas of exploration may include:

  • Emotional functioning and regulation.

  • Anxiety and depressive symptoms.

  • Trauma-related experiences and responses.

  • Attachment and relational patterns.

  • Self-perception and interpersonal functioning.

  • Behavioral and psychological concerns.

  • Additional diagnostic considerations when clinically appropriate.

What makes Art Therapy Assessments different?

Art-based assessment methods offer opportunities for individuals to communicate and explore experiences in ways that may feel more natural than traditional question-and-answer formats.

No artistic ability or previous art experience is necessary. This is not an art class, and there is no expectation to create something beautiful or technically correct.

The focus is on the individual's experience, the assessment process, and the clinical understanding developed through multiple sources of information.

You don't have to have all the words to begin understanding your story.
